A new fatal accident in Lorca reveals non-compliance with labor regulations and prevention plans (02/08/2020)

CCOO regrets this death that comes to reinforce the increase in claims reported by this union for the lack of means and inspections of companies in the field of occupational risk prevention. A 42-year-old man died yesterday after suffering an accident apparently from heat stroke and was abandoned at the Sutullena Health Center in the City of Lorca. Until now, no more information has been disclosed about the causes of the accident due to the lack of communication existing when events of this type occur, since the administration favors the bad practices of companies due to the lack of application of the precepts of the regulations in force in occupational risk prevention matter.

Since all employers must adopt prevention and protection measures to promote the safety of all their workers.

Exposure to extreme environmental temperatures represents a well-known danger to human health, the severity of which ranges from discomfort and fatigue to the dreaded heat stroke with this fatal outcome that has affected the life of the affected person. From CCOO we regret this death and express the intention of the union to clarify the causes of the accident, as well as to ask for responsibilities and makes all the services available to the family of the deceased person. CCOO highlights "the need for the Administration to monitor working conditions and to strengthen surveillance in companies so that the conditions for the prevention of occupational risks are met." This continuous increase in workplace accidents is another example of the poor quality of employment generated by the policies developed by the regional government. CCOO we have been denouncing publicly and before the labor inspection the breaches of the companies, that do not provide fresh water to drink to their staff, nor dining rooms where they can protect themselves from inclement weather and that even breach the intensive day, and all this with the aggravating to be warned of the high temperatures that would occur these days. CCOO requires companies to invest more to develop prevention plans in their workplaces, as well as special vigilance by the Labor Inspectorate and Public Administrations of working conditions.

This would make accidents like yesterday's could be avoided.
