The Councilor for Citizen Security of the City of Lorca, Jos Luis Ruiz Guilln, has reported the appearance of various cases of the telephone scam known as 'El corte de la luz'.
Ruiz explained that "through the Local Police of Lorca we have detected several cases in our municipality of the so-called telephone scam known as 'The light cut'.
A system that is usually used with merchants and hoteliers and whose activity includes working with perishable products ".
The mayor explained that "those in charge of launching this scam have a very organized 'modus operandi' because, before making the call, they find out about the company with which they have contracted the electricity and gas and, once this information is obtained, they proceed to call the victim establishment, posing as supply company personnel to demand immediate payment of the last two bills, supposedly unpaid, under threat of cutting off the supply immediately.
" Ruiz Guilln has detailed that "to make this payment they request an urgent transfer to an account number controlled by the scammers who, immediately, proceed to withdraw the transferred money to make it difficult or prevent its recovery, when the victim is aware that he has been scammed ".
The Councilor for Citizen Security has recommended that "in the event of any call of this nature, which is suspicious, do not make any payment and immediately contact the contracted company." Jos Luis Ruiz Guilln recalled that "energy supplying companies do not request income by telephone, without prior notice and without providing an official receipt and, in case of any doubt or suspicion, it is best to contact the Local Police, National Police or Civil Guard and report the event ".
