The recovery of six churches of the old town of Lorca, severely affected by the earthquakes that hit the city in May 2011, has been awarded the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage - Europa Nostra Award 2016, an award given by the European Union and Europa Nostra.
The project has been awarded in the Conservation category, along with 27 other winners from among 187 projects submitted by 36 European countries.
Europa Nostra Prize is recognition of the work carried out since the earthquakes in 2011 by the technical team led by architect Juan de Dios de la Hoz (Lavila Architects, SLP) in the churches of San Patricio, San Jose, San Mateo, Santiago, Nuestra Señora del Carmen and the Convent of San Francisco, and Lorquimur and Restauralia companies, which have carried out the works.
In its assessment, the jury highlighted the quality of the work with respect to traditional materials and techniques, combined with the introduction of tough measures against future earthquakes.
also highlighted the extraordinary reaction of civil society Lorca, from the moment that the Diocese of Cartagena and the Paso Blue Foundation began work, as it has achieved the collaboration and support of the State, the Autonomous Community of the Region Murcia, the city of Lorca and various foundations and organizations, to promote and finance the restoration of these temples.
The jury has also qualified as a model for subsequent management of the disaster, because not only has achieved the restoration of these buildings, but also, the project has had a positive influence on their environment and rapid recovery city.
Juan de Dios de la Hoz says are probably the prizes, more important in terms of heritage, promoting, turn best practices related to its conservation, management, research, education and communication practices internationally.
14 years have been granted awards to projects from 34 countries, highlighting those granted to Spain (59), United Kingdom (58), Italy (33), Germany (28) and Greece (25).
In the Region of Murcia is the second time that a project is awarded, after the Roman Theatre in Cartagena (2010), so Murcia happens to be among the most awarded in the Conservation category, after Madrid (6 awards), Valencia (5) and Zaragoza, Sevilla and Valladolid, with three awards each.
