The Councillor for Culture of the City of Lorca, Augustine Llamas, has shown this morning welcomed the opening morning worship in the churches of San Jose, San Diego and Cristo Rey after recovery of damages they caused the earthquakes in 2011.
Llamas congratulated the neighborhoods where these temples because the completion of these works are integrated and that they return to celebrate from the same weekend the first communions after that date, represent an important new advance in social activity , cultural, religious, urban and economic of the municipality.
In this sense, the mayor stressed the efforts made by the Ministry of Culture of the Autonomous Community and the Diocese of Cartagena, which has allowed rehabilitate two symbols of the religious heritage of the city and the reconstruction of the parish of ground zero earthquakes, the neighborhood of La Viña, which has substantially improved after the remodeling of the streets and the construction of hundreds of homes were demolished.
Agustin Llamas said "the recovery of the churches of San Jose and San Diego have allowed not only the recovery of this artistic legacy in its state prior to the earthquake, but finds elements that reinforce its historical value."
The rehabilitation of the church of San Jose is one of the examples of recovery of historical heritage that has made the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage Europa Nostra-conservation category.
The Community contributes € 1.2 million to € 700,000 San Diego to San Jose
It recalls that the Ministry of Culture and Spokesman granted the Diocese of Cartagena two grants for the recovery of the church of San Diego totaling EUR 1.2 million.
This building, with degree of protection in January, suffered considerable damage and the initial investment for rehabilitation included among others the recovery of the main facade, the old belfry, which collapsed, the consolidation of the structure, the settlement of the pillars and various performances on the vault and the temple.
During the course of these works of recovery have been detected other serious damage by earthquakes, such as those with the pillars supporting the vaulted structure, major divestitures of construction materials, deformations in soil structure of the dressing room and the false ceiling of the sacristy or the formation of skirts cover by reinforced concrete slabs, a risk factor very important to new quakes.
They have appeared decorative elements such as paintings in several areas of the ships and the chancel of the church and others in the roof of the vestry, Chapel of San Jose and on the side of the Sacristy, which will be recovered.
The need to undertake this work justifies this new grant for the rehabilitation of the Church of San Diego.
In addition, such counseling provided 700,000 euros for the restoration of the church of San José, dated between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, which has been found to primitive atrium of the church, as well as paintings, wood, and unknown archaeological levels .of Similarly, it replaced the vault of the central nave and recovered the oldest elements of the temple.
