The Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment performs an essay on adaptation and agronomic performance of pistachio cultivation in rainfed areas of the municipality of Lorca.
The varieties under study are Sirora, Larnaka, Kerman and Kastel, all low needs of cold hours.
The objective of this project, which began in 2014, is to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages offered its cultivation and its economic viability.
The general director of Innovation, Juana Mulero said that "in recent years are becoming plantations pistachero in Spain and it is foreseeable that in the future, product demand and the need for alternative crops, could be a interesting in the Region of Murcia "option.
Potential interested in the results obtained in this project are all those farmers, organizations and companies wishing to diversify crops in dry areas of the high councils of Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras, as well as neighboring towns.
The test is carried out in the village of Aviles, in an area of ​​6,500 square meters, with a density of 179 trees per hectare.
In 2014 the plantation was held in 2015 graft patterns with selected varieties, and this year an analysis of soil and water to facilitate the calculation of fertilizer requirements will be made.
The project has an environmental efficiency plan to reduce waste and consumption of 'inputs'.
For this integrated production standards are followed, with the use of active substances less hazardous to the environment and compliance with the code of good agricultural practices nitrates.
Also, ground and incorporated into the soil waste from pruning woody crops and other plant remains in order to reduce CO2 emissions, among others.
Dissemination of results
From the fourth year of cultivation technical visits will be made to the test area to present to stakeholders the behavior of the different varieties of pistachio.
Where available reliable production data, the Ministry will organize seminars and technical publications to disseminate the project results.
