Socialists believe that it must take advantage of the opportunity offered by the works of urban renewal in the axis of the Avenida de Santa Clara to clean up and to value the historic Iron Bridge, which once was ceded by Renfe to the City and it is in a sorry state of conservation and the environment, which is very neglected
Councilman Municipal Socialist Group, David Romera, has exposed the need to include the restoration and enhancement of historic Iron Bridge Lorca in the project which will involve the urban regeneration of Santa Clara Avenue.
The socialist mayor believes that this regeneration project financed by the EIB loan for the recovery of the city on the occasion of the earthquake that devastated Lorca in 2011, "is a unique opportunity to undertake the tidying and value of this lorquino monument late nineteenth century, the only Iron Bridge railway use that exists in the region of Murcia, designed by the English engineer Neil Kennedy in 1891 to join the San Diego stations and Sutullena saving the riverbed Guadalentín ".
Currently, this infrastructure, "recovered for City after being transferred by Renfe in 1993 to be replaced by a more modern bridge" is in a "lamentable state of neglect" and conditioning "would not involve a large financial outlay, being able to convert an architectural element to include in the tourist itineraries of the city. "
The Iron Bridge Lorca appears in the eyes of Lorca and visitors "in a very bad situation, with its structures of rusted iron, broken lights, protective panels located on the underpass, along with unsightly appear broken, and paints and graffiti flood these panels, structural elements of the bridge and the pedestrian underpass ".
It also explains the mayor Romera, "the environment appears full of garbage and waste, and is also necessary to involve the large existing commercial surface to improve cleaning of outdoor spaces that are owned."
David Romera, insists to finalize that in the regeneration project of the Avenida de Santa Clara, the city of Lorca "should include the recovery of this lorquino monument, the highest expression of architecture's own iron of the Industrial Revolution in Lorca and its surroundings, give a tourist use with the placement of information panels about the history and significance for the city and improve the urban environment to stop being a space forgotten and degraded ".
