The European Union's Europa Nostra award for the restoration of six of the churches in the municipality of Lorca affected by the earthquakes of 2011 will be delivered at a local ceremony next Tuesday, January 17th.
Although the solemn delivery was made in May last year at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid.
The temple of Our Lady of the Carmen de Lorca will host this event that will begin at 12:00 hours, with the intervention of the Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, Mons. José Manuel Lorca Planes;
Of the Minister of Fomentation of the Region of Murcia, Pedro Rivera;
And the mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jódar.
The president of Hispania Nostra, Araceli Pereda, and a member of Europa Nostra, José María Ballester, will be responsible for the symbolic delivery of the commemorative plaque.
Then there will be a tour in which you will discover several plaques in the restored buildings: the church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the Blue Museum of Holy Week (MASS), San Mateo and Santiago Apostle.
Juan de Dios de la Hoz has been the architect in charge of directing the restoration works of the six churches (San Patricio, San José, San Mateo, Santiago Apostle, Nuestra Señora del Carmen and the old convent of San Francisco). Companies Lorquimur and Restauralia.
The jury of the Europa Nostra awards described the restoration, made in just five years, as an incredible achievement, highlighting the recovery of the image and function of buildings, respecting the use of traditional materials and techniques.
He also acknowledged the management model following the catastrophe, as not only has the restoration of these buildings been achieved, but also the project has had a positive influence on its environment and the rapid recovery of the city.
Finally, the extraordinary reaction of the Civil Society was highlighted, since the collaboration and support of the State, the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, the City of Lorca and various foundations and organizations, together with the Diocese of Cartagena and the Fundación Paso Azul, in an authentic model of post-disaster management.
