The recovery of heritage damaged by earthquakes is a model to be followed for other cities suffering major catastrophes.
Lorca today receives the Europa Nostra prize, to which is added the concession in 2014 of the National Prize of Conservation and Restoration.
The mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, has said that the recovery of Lorca after the earthquakes of May 2011 has become the greatest challenge that any Spanish city has had to face in contemporary times.
It is very easy to forget the state of this city during the night of that miserable day and now, over the years, not to appreciate the enormous effort carried out so that it would not remain stranded in the tragedy but, on the contrary, recovering leaving behind the pain.
The First Edil has emphasized that Lorca was then a broken city.
Today is a New Lorca that looks with optimism and conviction to the future and in which the ambitious process of recovery goes through its last meters with the aim that nothing and no one is left behind.
The Master Plan is an effective tool that offers us a very positive balance;
In 5 years 98% of the planned budget has been executed and 100% of the budget has been committed.
Francisco Jódar stressed that the Europa Nostra award, whose symbolic act of delivery takes place during the day today in this city, confirms that the recovery of our heritage has been model.
The monumental heritage brings us urban beauty and generates tourism, as well as being our main heritage.
We are talking about our legacy, the dialogue we maintain with our history and with previous and future generations.
The Mayor has stated that, with the necessary perspective that gives us the passage of time, we find that such an ambitious process has paid off.
Lorca proudly wears its monuments and Lorca enjoy them, as do the growing number of visitors who walk through these streets between curiosity and surprise to notice everything achieved in only 5 ½ years.
Not only has the wealth of churches, palaces and manor houses recovered, but they also look better than ever thanks to the work done by impeccable professionals who have sown their illusion in this city.
The Europa Nostra Prize, awarded to the project to recover the temples of San Patricio, San José, San Mateo, Santiago, the Convent of San Francisco and this church of Carmen is a satisfaction and a stimulus, but also a resounding applause that, International level, tells us that we have done well.
It should be recalled that the promoters of the various rehabilitations have been the Diocese of Cartagena and the Paso Azul Foundation;
The companies Restauralia and Lorquimur;
In addition to Lavila Arquitectos the national and regional administrations that, together with the City Council, have worked hand in hand to make the recovery of Lorca's assets a reality.
740 pages to know in depth the patrimonial recovery.
The recovery of Lorca after the earthquakes of May 2011 is a unique international process that, due to its magnitude, its efficiency and the result that will come when it ends, will have gained by its own moment a prominent place in the History of our nation.
We speak of moving from a shattered city to real estate, heritage and, also, to the soul level, a new, modern city with better facilities and full vocation for the future.
Consider for a moment the collapse of the Tower of the Spire, the fall of the steeple of the church of San Diego, damages in San Cristobal, the collapse of Santiago, the cracks in the Chapel of the Rosary, San Francisco, the Palace of Guevara or the War Theater.
Now let's think about its current state.
The difference is remarkable and leads us to be aware of the depth of the process developed under the Master Plan for the Recovery of Assets.
We are proud of what has been achieved, for through this process we have succeeded in making every restored monument look much better than before the earthquake.
This work does not stop here, we continue working until all our architectural treasure is in perfect conditions.
The declarations of the Mayor took place during the presentation of the book "The recovery of the cultural heritage of the city of Lorca", edited by the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute (IPCE), which gathers in 740 pages a detailed report of each monument, Photographic archive and the development of rehabilitation works.
It is an exciting journey that goes beyond the actual process to immerse oneself in the patrimonial legacy of the city with a wide scope of research and depth.
This work allows to know the peculiarities of a process as unique as brilliant.
