The Minister of Development and Infrastructures, Pedro Rivera, and the mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, made a visit today to the works to improve access and the environment of the hermitages of the district of El Calvario in Lorca on the occasion of its beginning and Which are part of the integral remodeling of the neighborhood.
This action, which has a term of execution of ten months, has an investment of 490,000 euros by the Community.
The councilor said that the hermitages of El Calvario neighborhood "represent one of the highlights of Lorca's Holy Week, such as the Via Crucis, while being part of one of the most characteristic enclaves of the Barrios and the city Of Lorca ".
Rivera said that these works "claim the values ​​that identify El Calvario with the improvement of pedestrian access to the viewpoint of the city and the recovery and enhancement of its urban environment, in order to better adapt it to the new Lorca."
The most important action to be carried out in El Calvario is the improvement of the pedestrian access to the viewpoint, which will involve the installation of a structure of metallic porticos and steel cables to house climbing plants that form shadows.
The project also includes the renovation of the irrigation system, which will extend to areas that previously did not have this service, and the extension of the garden area with the planting of a hundred trees and more than 250 shrubs.
Likewise, the square will be improved on Second Fall Street with the installation of new urban furniture, for example benches, and a wooden pergola to provide more shaded areas.
The improvement action of this space will be completed with the rehabilitation of the pavement and the walls surrounding the hermitages, damaged by earthquakes, the renovation of the sports court and fencing of this facility and the construction of a youth hostel and sports areas , Which will allow the installation of two boules courts and a gymnasium area for seniors.
Finally, all municipal public lighting will be renewed in order to reduce energy consumption and improve lighting 80 lights will be replaced by other led lights.
Integral renovation of the neighborhood
This action is part of the project for the integral renovation of the district of El Calvario, which has a total budget of 2.7 million euros financed from the loan contracted by the Community with the European Investment Bank and which is implemented by the City Council Of Lorca.
Within this project, 14 streets have been remodeled, including Espolón, Baeza, Cabezo Los Vélez, Juan Bayonas, Moreira, Pintor Muñoz, Fray Francisco de Lorca, Romero, Alonso Vargas, Bajada del Calvario, Cañada Sepulcro, Second Fall, Colt and the adjacent houses Perez.
The works have consisted in the replacement of the pavement by prefabricated paving of red, black and white colors;
Renewal of sanitation and drinking water supply networks;
The creation of underground pipelines for electrical wiring, telephony and public lighting, as well as the renovation of streetlights with LED technology.
The works of El Calvario are part of the 10.5 million euro agreement for the renovation of the Barrios Altos.
