The Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Montiel, together with the Councilor for Culture in the Municipal Consistory, Agustín Llamas, visited this morning the works of recovery of the popular Fuente del Oro, which are running in this enclave with the aim of putting value A construction of marked hearth for the municipality.
These are works that have already reached 80% of their execution and that, if there are no major contingencies, they are expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, allowing Lorca to recover both the source and the area in which Is located
The Mayor has indicated that traditional access will also be recovered and a rainwater collection network will be installed to avoid the current flooding that occurs on the surface.
The project of recovery of the Source of Gold contemplates an investment of 265,000 euros, included within the Master Plan for the Recovery of the Heritage damaged by the earthquakes of 2011. Thanks to this investment we recovered a historical space for the municipality and that is included in the Catalog of Historical Property of Lorca.
The First Edil has indicated that the Source of Gold is part of our heritage legacy and now, thanks to this investment, not only will repair the multiple damages that earthquakes inflicted on the construction causing the collapse of several wall paintings, but Will put value on the whole.
This will restore the source and its elements such as glass, pipes, walls, watering pylon ... and the surrounding urban space, including paving levels closer to the original.
Also will be restored crowns of the two longitudinal walls parallel to the Avenida de Santa Clara.
Francisco Montiel has stated that traditional access will be recovered including a new wall in the front, trying also the recovery of the trough, as well as the poyetes or benches and will illuminate the whole.
There will also be installed a water collection network that will prevent the current flooding that occurs on the surface.
On the other hand is intended to recover the protagonism of the water in the work, including a closed water circuit that allows its passage through the source and watering holes.
La Fuente del Oro was built in the 18th century and next to the Fuente del Caño they were in charge of supplying water to the population.
The fountain was composed in an original way by a water trough or a rectangular washbasin, on which the water was continuously discharged through a series of pipes.
In 1802 the break of the Pantano de Puentes produced an avenue that destroyed all the sources of the city, among them the one of Gold, that was reconstructed in 1818.
During the second half of the twentieth century, works of reordering took place in the space that led to the disappearance of the Fuente del Oro, causing the pipes to be buried underground and only the structure of the old laundry.
The Mayor stressed that, as regards the recovery of the historical heritage damaged after the earthquakes of 2011, 85% of the planned investment in the Master Plan, with a total of 64.3 million euros, has already been implemented, A figure that reaches 95 percent in relation to the Goods of Cultural Interest (BIC).
Today, in the area of ​​cultural heritage, Lorca is working, among other issues and as more significant examples, in the recovery of the medieval church of Santa Maria, as well as in the musealization of the synagogue located in the enclosure The castle, the rehabilitation of the Villaescusa Palace and the House of the Marin Ponce de León.
