The motto under which this initiative is celebrated this year is "Tobacco, a threat to development".
The World Health Organization (WHO), on 31 May, celebrates World No Tobacco Day every year to tackle this health problem.

Tobacco use is one of the greatest threats to public health, both in developed and developing countries, as it produces about 7 million deaths a year, of which 890,000 are non-exposed to second-hand smoke.
This situation is due to the fact that tobacco contains products that produce 16 types of cancers and some 30 serious diseases.
At the national level, mortality analyzes show that 24.7% of all deaths from different cancers are tobacco-related, accounting for 80% of all lung cancers.
In relation to heart disease, the percentage of mortality associated with smoking is 10.9%.
In all cases mortality is higher in men than in women.
Data on tobacco consumption in the Region of Murcia from the last European Health Survey in Spain (2014) show that in the Region the prevalence of smokers is 28.4%, three points higher than the national average ( 25.4%).
Given this situation, the Directorate General of Public Health and Addictions of the Ministry of Health, has launched an information and awareness campaign to promote the cessation of smoking, with the motto "Win the life. easier".
The Minister of Health has indicated that this action is distributing various information material among Lorca, such as Smoking Cessation Guidelines, Information for smokers, Information for non-smokers, Information for women, Information for young people and Information For pregnant women.
According to Ruiz Jódar, according to the most recent data, smoking in the Region of Murcia continues to be a very important problem, since 28.4% of the population smokes daily (25.6%). (2.9%), with consumption still higher in men (30.5%) than in women (26.3%) and higher than the national average (25.4%) in the case of women ( 20.5%).
With respect to previous data, there is a decreasing trend in tobacco use in the case of men, but not in women with a slight increase.
Regarding the exposure to Tobacco Environmental Smoke, the survey reflects that 16.9% of people are exposed in closed places in our region.
The City Council reports on the risks of active and passive smoking, and the need to promote tobacco-free spaces in different settings and to assist smoking cessation.
It is to advocate respect for areas totally free of tobacco and smoke.
Smokers should know that smoking chemicals are breathed in for cancer-causing chemicals like Formaldehyde (used to embalm corpses), Benzene (present in gasoline), Polonium (radioactive) and Vinyl Chloride (used in the manufacture of pipelines).
These environments also present concentrations of toxic metals such as Arsenic (pesticides), Chromium (steel), Lead (paints) and Cadmium (batteries).
Other poisonous gases of these spaces are Carbon Monoxide (exhaust gases), Hydrocyanic Acid (chemical weapons), Ammonia (cleaners) and Toluene (solvents).
