The European Investment Bank expands until December 2018 the deadline for works in Lorca, as requested by the Community and the City Council

The president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, announced today in Lorca that the Community will finance with seven million euros the second phase and completion of the works of the fairgrounds and congresses of Lorca, located in Santa Quiteria, and the culmination of the urban renewal of the neighborhood, following receipt of the financing authorization from the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Lopez Miras made these statements during the inauguration in Lorca of the 'Market of the Sun', where he reiterated the firm commitment of the regional government with the recovery of Lorca after the earthquake of 2011, "a city in which has already made an investment of around 1.2 billion euros.

"With the new fairgrounds and congresses we will have in Lorca one of the economic and cultural infrastructures in the region," said the president, who added that "Lorca will be, if a little more, the growth engine of the whole Region and, for that reason, today we have a double reason to be in congratulations. "

He explained that the overall project contemplates two phases.

The first one has allowed to increase the exhibition capacity of the fair center to 8,600 square meters, 3,600 square meters more than the old space;

and the second phase will complete the urban renewal of the neighborhood and the fairgrounds and congresses.

Extension of the deadline to carry out works in Lorca

In addition, the EIB has approved the extension of one year in the period for the execution of works in Lorca, until December 2018, as requested by the regional government and the City of Lorca.

90 per cent of the works whose investments were planned to mitigate the effects of the 2011 earthquakes, financed with the € 185 million loan signed in 2012 with the EIB, have already begun, and whose works, which have consisted of rehabilitation of buildings, reconstruction of neighborhoods, educational buildings, cultural heritage, sports facilities and roads have benefited practically the whole population.

Inauguration of the 'Market of the sun'

In addition to the items destined to the reconstruction of the city, in Lorca investments have been made to promote trade as well, for example, the 500,000 euros allocated by the Ministry of Commerce to the start-up of the 'Mercado del Sol ', inaugurated today by the President of the Community in an event where the Secretary of State for Commerce, María Luisa Poncela, was also present.

"A gastronomic space that will be one of the main economic engines of the city and that will boost tourism and tourism in Lorca," said López Miras, who stressed the importance of this project "not only for Lorca but for the whole Region ".
