The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment will carry out during the next months the complete restoration of the size of the Virgin of the Huertas, patroness of Lorca, after a thorough analysis.
The Secretary General of the Ministry, Pilar Valero, today received the image at the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia from the hands of the president of the Royal Hermandad de Santa María La Real de las Huertas, Isabel Giménez.
Valero explained that "the size of the patroness of Lorca already passed in 2016 by the Restoration Center to begin to study their condition and made a punctual intervention with the aim that the Virgin of the Huertas was in his sanctuary for the liturgical acts and holidays organized in his honor. "
Now, added the Secretary General, the Virgin, an emblem for Lorca and one of the most revered images and with the greatest tradition of the Region, "returns to the center to be subjected to a comprehensive restoration, as recently committed by President Fernando López Miras "picture.
As a first step, an exhaustive conservation study will be carried out, thanks to the modern technical means available in the workshops of the center, to detect possible problems of previous interventions or any pathology that can affect the size, later proceed to its recovery and cleaning with the aim of contributing to its better conservation.
The Virgin of the Huertas de Lorca is a carved polychrome wood carving from the first half of the twentieth century by the sculptor José Sánchez Lozano.
It is a replica of the primitive image of the Virgin, from the 13th century, which was destroyed in 1936.
Restoration of the Sanctuary
In addition, the Community will allocate 171,729 euros to conclude the last phase of the rehabilitation of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria La Real de las Huertas.
The works, which will begin before the end of the year and whose project is undergoing processing by the Community, will consist of the intervention in the dressing room of the Virgin, with sewing actions and consolidation at the wall level to avoid movements and water inlets.
Restoration of facades and perimeter drainage in the crypt will also proceed.
The investment made so far in the Lorca sanctuary, as a result of the damages suffered in the earthquakes of 2011, amounts to more than 1.7 million euros.
This property is one of the buildings restored with the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture and included in the Master Plan for the Recovery of Cultural Heritage of Lorca.
In addition, according to Valero, the Community has invested more than 23 million euros of the funds provided by the European Investment Bank in the recovery of the heritage of Lorca, "an important contribution that will allow the city to recover all its splendor and its monumental wealth and demonstrates the commitment of the regional government with the city of Lorca and with the Lorca, who have given a great example of overcoming.
