Adoración Peñas, councilman of IU-Greens, has denounced the consequences of the lack of social workers in the health field.
The mayor said that this professional profile is known and associated with the municipal social services and NGOs, but points out that it is essential that there is the figure of the social worker in all health centers and public hospitals.
According to Peñas, the functions of these professionals within a multidisciplinary team are diverse, such as carrying out studies of health and risk factors related to health, individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities;
planning psychosocial interventions in the health context or implementing health promotion and disease prevention programs.
He affirms that for a comprehensive assessment of the patient, a multidisciplinary team, composed of professionals in medicine, nursing and social work is necessary, since not only are the health problems, but also the social factors related to the health problem, already that this form of assessment is of vital importance for groups such as the elderly, the chronically ill, people with severe mental illness, terminally ill, those with addiction problems, cases of gender violence, etc.
Despite this, IU-Verdes denounce that they do not rely on this model from the administration, which means leaving unattended the social factors that affect the problem of users, as well as the impact it has on other professionals.
Such is the case of the San Diego health center.
The mayor recalls that this is a mass center, covering urban areas with high population densities and serving a large percentage of immigrant population that, sometimes, requires more specific social attention.
Peñas warns that there are only two social workers in the entire health area III, one in Totana and another in the Rafael Méndez hospital and that the lack of social worker in this health center (as in the rest) causes other professionals such as pediatricians, have to exercise social work on occasions to respond to the various social problems that users of health services.
From IU-Verdes deeply lament this situation, a direct consequence of not having this professional figure, which is recognized by the autonomous legislation, which causes that they stop carrying out functions like orientation, support and advice to families, individuals and groups;
information on benefits, access and use of existing health and social resources or the assessment and capture of situations and risk groups in collaboration with other professionals.
The mayor says that her training has received numerous complaints from users and professionals who denounce the saturation of some professionals such as pediatricians and midwives who can not carry out their work with agility by requiring, in addition to an increase in the workforce, social workers who attend to the factors mentioned.
Therefore, from IU-Greens demand the mayor to claim before the management of area III of health and before the CARM itself to fulfill their obligation to implant a social worker in all health centers, especially those who attend a higher percentage of vulnerable population, reminding to him that the local administration must ensure that essential public services such as social or health services tend to grow and improve instead of suffering further cuts, paying special attention also to the group of midwives.
