The Community celebrates today the Day of the Urbanism, that commemorates from 1949 with the aim of reflecting on the cities and populations, the multiple relations that take place inside and out of them and the discipline in charge of its study and its planning.
On the occasion of this anniversary, the Director General of Territorial Planning, Architecture and Housing, Laura Sandoval, delivered a manifesto today in Lorca to highlight the "importance of the urban regeneration of the neighborhoods of this city as an example".
"Lorca is a clear example of the effort made in the recovery, reuse, recycling of the city, and implementation of initiatives for sustainable mobility, priority objectives of current urban planning," said the director, who indicated that "the revitalization of the city in this sense has as a direct consequence the improvement of life of its population ".
Laura Sandoval said that the renovation of the city complies with the principles of the II European Urban Charter, called 'Manifesto for a new urbanity', prepared by the Council of Europe in May 2008, because, among other issues, "the design of the new urban spaces are realized from the understanding of the identity signs that give cohesion and personality to Lorca, to walk towards that new city that is wanted, better and more habitable ".
"It is the paradigm of the positive action of urbanism, which, as established in the preamble of the Regional Law of territorial and urban planning, is based on three basic pillars: environmental, social and economic sustainability," said Laura Sandoval.
Sustainable urban mobility plan
Among the novel instruments that characterize the "new urbanism" of this city, the director highlighted the implementation of the 'Sustainable urban mobility plan of Lorca', which "allows a compact city, a controlled mobility and respectful of the environment, that not only improves the quality of life, but also the previous and indispensable condition for its proper development ".
The aforementioned plan aims to return people to prominence, facilitate the connection between the neighborhoods of the historic center and those of recent creation and reconnect the city with the orchard that surrounds it.
The director recalled that this action is part of the actions developed by the Community to promote accessibility and ensure the friendliness of urban environments in the various cities of the region, which have invested 160,000 euros.
The plan proposes the development of ten strategic lines, which are grouped into 65 measures, to promote more sustainable modes of transport (bicycle, foot and public transport).
It is a municipal management tool that helps efficiently organize the different modes of transport that are generated within a city, and promotes the most respectful with the environment (on foot, by bike, public transport) and rationalizes the use of motorized transport, especially of the car.
