The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martín, has announced that her municipal group will take a motion to the Municipal Plenary for the Lorca City Council to promote the construction of a new bridge over the Guadalentín River, in order to solve the problems of communication that afflict the neighborhoods Altos (west) and those of San Cristóbal, Apolonia, Los Angeles, as well as the deputation of Rio (north).
This would reduce the volume of traffic in the conflicting layout of Plaza de la Estrella and give "direction and continuity" to the General Road System called Ronda Distribuidora Oeste (SGV-4 and SGV-5).
This last route, when it materializes, will begin on the road of the Puentes reservoir, at the point where the climb to the castle currently starts.
IU-Verdes proposes to connect it, with the construction of the new bridge, with the neighborhoods surrounding the Caravaca highway and with the Mediterranean highway.
Martín explained that the General Plan approved in 2003, and whose most important forecasts have barely yet been met, made in his Memory of Order a severe diagnosis on the communication problems that afflict the city of Lorca, whose linear character and transversal expansion It is strongly conditioned by the railway line and by the ravine of Tiata.
Another important physical condition is the Guadalentín River, which, with only two bridges over the empty riverbed, leaves neighborhoods in this area "cornered," said Martín.
The General Plan itself recognizes that the Diputación de Río and the neighborhoods of San Cristóbal, Apolonia and Los Ángeles, are totally isolated in their urban structures, connecting exclusively through the main street and Avenue of the Armed Forces.
Problems whose important dimension has been verified recently in the remodeling works of Ortega Melgares street.
The mayor also alluded to the episode "lamentable", denounced by IU-Green, occurred on the occasion of the departure in Lorca of a stage of the Tour of Spain, when the vehicles were forced to travel through the river Guadalentín, despite an orange alert for possible episodes of cold drop.
In this regard, Martin described as "negligent" want to convert the natural ford bed of the river into a road, something that would have the more than predictable opposition from the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura and that constitutes a security risk in case of avenues.
"We do not know if the basin organization has authorized this route, which we consider a mere patch and does not guarantee access to emergency equipment in case of flooding of the river," said the mayor.
On the other hand, the upper districts, located in the foothills of the Castle, also have structural problems of little or no road connection with the rest of the city, especially with those located on the other side of the river.
Circumstances that have caused that they are afflicted by a deep degradation of their built park and suffer from the equipments and necessary services for the suitable development of the population.
For Martin, the construction of this bridge should be the beginning of actions, which he considers urgent, for the execution of the general road systems that should articulate and give continuity to the urban fabric of the upper neighborhoods and those located to the north of the city, in need of strong public investments and, most of them, great forgotten in the urban regeneration works financed by the European Investment Bank loan.
For all these reasons, IU-Verdes considers that the best "technical and urban" solution, and also the most accepted from the social point of view, would be to comply with the content of the General Plan and build a new bridge over the riverbed.
Gloria Martín said that this action could have the necessary financing if the project included the cancellation of the contracts awarded in the regeneration works.
"Lorca is losing the opportunity to give a comprehensive solution to communication problems and lack of connection in their neighborhoods," said the councilor of IU-Green.
For this reason, he encouraged the PP municipal government team to "prioritize investments" through rational urban planning and infrastructures that really increase the quality of life of the residents.
