The Region of Murcia will host from 3 to 5 October the international conference on 'Cultural heritage and catastrophes: Lorca as a reference', organized by the association Hispania Nostra with the Autonomous Community, the City of Lorca and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and that will serve to demonstrate the recovery of the city of Lorca after the earthquakes of 2011.
The speakers include representatives of Unesco and the International Center for Studies for the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Property;
the coordinator of the National Emergency Plan of the Ministry, Ángel Luis de Sousa;
the restorer of the National Library of Spain and National Restoration Prize, Arsenio Sánchez;
the architect of the Polytechnic University of Madrid Alfonso Muñoz Cosme, and the researcher of the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain Andrés Díez, among other international experts.
The counselor Javier Celdrán, along with Mayor Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, and the president of Hispania Nostra, Araceli Pereda, today advanced some details of this meeting "with which, from the regional government, we join the celebration of the European Year of Heritage Cultural, disseminating as an example of good practices the quick and effective action carried out after the Lorca earthquakes, which was made possible thanks to the coordination between administrations and the creation of the Master Plan for the Recovery of Cultural Heritage. "
The cultural heritage is threatened by catastrophes and natural disasters and caused by man.
Before them, prevention, planning, coordination and technical preparation to act quickly are vital to avoid losses and make possible the recovery of heritage.
In this congress you can learn about experiences lived in places like Mexico, Chile, Italy and Sarajevo, their systems of protection and action.
In addition to making reference to the international speakers, the counselor highlighted the participation in the congress of the professionals of the General Directorate of Cultural Assets, "whose experience and good work is well-known, as they have participated, for example, in the last Heritage Council of Spain and also traveled at the end of last year to Mexico to advise on the recovery of the cities affected by the earthquake that occurred in mid-September. "
He also recalled that "in the Region of Murcia has created the Emergency Unit in Cultural Heritage, already integrated into the operational structure of Civil Protection, and are also reviewing intervention projects in cultural heritage taking into account the reintroduction of elements and construction techniques that demonstrate a better behavior against adverse phenomena such as earthquakes ".
Completion of the master plan
Regarding the recovery of the city of Lorca, it is expected that the reconstruction process included in the master plan will conclude this year.
The earthquakes considerably affected a significant part of the city's cultural heritage, both religious buildings and numerous buildings of a civil nature, and in fact it is considered the greatest structural destruction of a city in Spain since the Civil War.
The master plan contemplates the investment of 64.3 million euros.
In the case of the Community, the amount is close to 25 million, with which emblematic buildings such as the Collegiate Church of San Patricio, numerous churches, the Palace of the Huerto de Ruano, the Archaeological Museum and the Fuente del Oro have been restored. And among the actions still underway are, for example, the recovery of the Casino and the Plaza de Toros.
Javier Celdrán said that "thanks to this intense work, the involvement and integrity of Lorca and the commitment of the Government of López Miras with the recovery and conservation of our heritage, Lorca looks even better today than before those fateful earthquakes occurred, and it has become a point of special interest within the cultural and patrimonial tourism that we are promoting from the Ministry and that contributes to the economic and social improvement of our Region ".
