The temple, which will be used for cultural purposes, will be finished at the end of May or the beginning of June, with the recovery works already in their final phase.
After its restoration it will form a cultural value that will contribute to the tourist and monumental impulse of Lorca
The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, and the Delegate of the Government in the Region of Murcia, Francisco Bernabé, visited this morning the church of Santa María, whose recovery works are in their final phase and will conclude, in all probability, at the end of May or the beginning of June.
Bernabé, accompanied by the mayor of Lorca, has indicated that the final result of these works will be spectacular, and that, like all the actions carried out in Lorca, obey to a work and a joint and coordinated effort of the Government of Spain, the Autonomous Community and the City Council.
"This is a joint effort, in this temple, in particular, are more than 1,080,000 euros to recover one of the most emblematic buildings of the city, with a result that will be truly spectacular." And this, as part of a set of investments that far exceeds the 1,200 million euros that have been put on the table for the construction of this new Lorca of which we are all already enjoying, "said the delegate.
Rehabilitation process
The new structure of six wooden trusses, of large dimensions, will support the new roof, which will be made up of panels, also made of wood, and will be crowned with tiles in accordance with the environment in which the church is located, respecting the aesthetic line of This type of temples.
The Church, which began to be built in the 15th century and was completed in the 18th century with the incorporation of the Rococo facade, had no roof since the Civil War, when it was looted and burned down.
The dismantling of the bell tower has also been completed, proceeding to equip it with new elements that give it greater structural security, implementing a battery of fasteners based on the incorporation of special tensors to avoid the degradation that this tower was suffering. that, after the earthquakes of 2011, had worsened to the point of seriously compromising its stability.
Thanks to these works, we now have an assured element, going from a situation of almost ruin to forming a cultural value that will contribute to the tourist and monumental impulse of the city of Lorca.
The project underway also foresees the installation of a new cornice and its corresponding balustrade.
Once the church has been restored, desacralized by its dilapidated condition, it will be reconverted into a cultural space and will initially house a retrospective exhibition on the entire process of reconstruction and rehabilitation of the historical heritage damaged by the 2011 earthquakes.
