This project affects the delimitation of free spaces, transport, housing, respect, social participation, communication and social services.
The initiative aims for the elderly to decide how to boost their active aging.
The Councilor for Policy of the Major in the City of Lorca, María Belén Pérez, reported that the Municipal Council, the Poncemar Foundation and the Poncemar Chair of Gerontology have constituted, together with representatives of different groups of seniors from different fields (culture, assistance , society,) the Promoter Group, group responsible for promoting and making reality the project "Lorca, friendly city with the elderly".
It is a working group that meets periodically in the Casa del Capitán, headquarters of the aforementioned Chair, to advance in the drafting of the "City of Lorca's Friendliness Plan", in which it is intended to have the participation of the elders of all districts and districts of Lorca, as well as representatives of different areas of municipal government.
Pérez Martínez explained that currently the work focuses on enhancing the participation of multiple groups in our municipal area, deepening the path marked in this regard by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2005. It is, among other issues, to know what are the needs of our elders in multiple issues with the aim of establishing concrete action proposals for the design of cities and communities adapted to this group.
The Promoter Group is made up of elderly people with concerns and motivation for improvement in our locality, supervised by the Commission for Friendly Cities.
The work that I develop makes it possible to gather information through more than 15 Discussion Groups (formed by people over 70 years of age and service providers), friendliness surveys (aimed at the entire population) and qualitative data analysis.
We are talking about a participatory project, open to any other person who shares these concerns, being able to contact those interested by phone 968 473 944 or by email catedragerontia@poncemar.com
We must remember that physical and social environments are key determinants for people to stay healthy, independent and autonomous during their old age.
This project affects, among other areas, the delimitation of free spaces, transportation, housing, respect, social participation, communication, social services.
It is an initiative of continuous improvement that aims to involve the elderly and contribute to make Lorca a more inclusive city that promotes active aging.
The City Council has stated that on behalf of the Mayor's Policy Department, we aim to promote enabling living environments for aging people, with the elderly as their protagonists and with the involvement of the general public and the public, private sector. And social.
This project is based on the "Age-friendly Environments Program" initiative promoted by the World Health Organization that is set up in a global network composed of 541 cities in 37 countries.
According to the WHO, a "Friendly City with the Elderly" is one in which the policies, services and structures, as well as the physical and social environment, are designed to support and make the older person remain active, that is, live. safely, enjoy good health and participate in daily life.
María Belén Pérez has pointed out that the well-being of the elderly must be a priority for the whole society, that is why the administrations are the first ones that we have to put to work so that the change of model becomes a reality.
Lorca is the example, because in the activities developed by the Department of the Mayor or by clubs or associations of neighborhoods and districts we find that its participants are dynamic, participatory, who enjoy taking the initiative and are an example of commitment and cooperation.
Lorca works for his elders, offering the activities and initiatives that they demand.
We must promote the policies, services and structures, as well as the relevant physical and social environment to ensure that our elders remain active, having an impact on living safely, enjoying good health and participating actively in daily life.
