Adoración Peñas, councilor of IU-Greens in the City of Lorca, denounces that the scholarship meal match remains frozen for the 2018-19 course (3.8 million euros) whose application period has expired just a week ago and insists in the need to expand them, as well as to open school canteens during the summer months.
The counselor has recognized that the departure for these scholarships remains the same as last year, at 3.8 million euros, a question independent of the aid for books.
According to the Ministry, this item will allow granting 5,000 scholarships, and another 1,000 students will benefit from school transport and lunch, so the number of students is close to 6,000, a figure clearly insufficient for the mayor, since only in the municipality of Lorca, there are centers such as San Cristóbal with more than 600 students, in which a high percentage of them need aid for school meals in order to ensure they have at least one meal a day in conditions.
Peñas warns that it is necessary to contextualize the amount of aid granted with the environment and states that, in order to be a recipient of the aid, a family of 8 members can not have gross incomes greater than 1,033 euros per month.
Not in vain, Peñas recalls that, according to the data offered by the latest UNICEF report, 40% of the child population of the Region of Murcia, or what is the same, 120,000 children in the Region are at risk of poverty or exclusion, which is an estimate of some 8,400 Lorca minors, extrapolating the demographic data, since the Lorca population represents almost 7% of the total population of the Region.
The mayor described as dramatic the situation, which has been repeated since the hardest years of the economic crisis, and calls for acting as a priority, requiring the Lorca municipality to demand urgent action before the administration and the regional government as well as making reports periodically to know the situation of childhood, creating an Observatory dedicated to childhood;
and, of course, invest more money and public resources in policies dedicated to minors.
In this sense, from IU-Green ensure that the regional and local governments, both of the PP, look the other way and turn a blind eye to such deplorable and dramatic situations and regret that in Lorca systematically deny the opening of school canteens on vacation, as has been demonstrated in this legislature in which IU-Verdes has been making this request (always rejected by the government team) since 2015.
"With childhood you do not play," said Peñas, who has once again insisted on the need to open such dining halls, especially in those schools where the generalized situation of families is more precarious and vulnerable, especially considering that the aids during the course are very scarce, that many families are left out by the very low economic thresholds established and that the midday meal is the only decent day to which thousands of children aspire in our municipality.
