The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, has encouraged all Lorca to participate in the various events that have been planned by the Brotherhood of the Virgen de las Huertas on the occasion of the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Canonical Coronation of the Patron saint of the city.
The Mayor has said that the people of Lorca profess a special devotion to our Patroness and throughout this year a series of activities has been programmed by different groups and citizens to honor the Virgen de las Huertas, which will be detailed in the near future. .
The First Edil has indicated that the group that has taken the lead in this matter has been the group of Choirs and Dances of Lorca, which has launched an initiative to embroider in wool a new cloak to the Patron of the city.
It is a project whose design is already being worked on so that it can be prepared by the members of the group in the workshop they have at their headquarters.
This piece is added to the mantle with which this group already gave the Patroness years ago on the occasion of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of its foundation.
The objective that has been raised is to be able to deliver it on September 8, 2019, coinciding with the onomastics of the Virgen de las Huertas.
Fulgencio Gil, who has been accompanied at a press conference by the President of the Brotherhood of the Virgen de las Huertas, Isabel Giménez, and the President of the group of Choirs and Dances of Lorca, Inmaculada Martínez de Miguel, has anticipated that the City Council also is already working on a surprise that will be delivered to the Patroness to celebrate this event.

On September 8th, commemorates the feast of the patron saint of Lorca, laVirgen de las Huertas, which tradition points to as the image brought by Alfonso X el Sabio in 1244, when he conquered the city.

This image was already taken in 2016 by the Restoration Center to begin studying its state and a specific intervention was carried out with the objective that the Virgen de las Huertas was in her sanctuary for the liturgical and festive events organized in her honor.
It is currently undergoing a comprehensive restoration, including an exhaustive conservation study thanks to the modern technical means available in the center's workshops.
The objective is to detect possible problems of previous interventions or other pathologies that may affect the size, later it will proceed to its recovery and cleaning in order to contribute to its better conservation.
Fulgencio Gil has indicated that works are currently being carried out in the church thanks to the contribution of 171,000 euros from the Regional Government.
These works include the restoration of the antechamber flooring as well as the restoration of part of the facades and the construction of a bufa chamber, through the installation of a parallel partition to eliminate humidity.
