The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Javier Celdrán, and the mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, visited today the Waste Treatment Center of the municipality, where the Autonomous Community will invest almost 6 million euros in the coming weeks to complete the modernization of this infrastructure that contributes to the development of the circular economy in the Region of Murcia.
This is the fifth phase of adaptation of these facilities to advance the fulfillment of the goal for 2020 that a minimum of 50 percent of the weight of domestic and commercial waste be allocated to the preparation and recycling, returning to the productive system as raw material and contributing to a more sustainable environmental and economic development.
This new investment will improve the recovery and preparation of the 64,000 tons of waste that the center receives each year, from homes and businesses in Lorca, Puerto Lumbreras, Totana, Aledo, Alhama de Murcia and Águilas;
as well as the 910 tons of light containers collected in Lorca, Totana, Puerto Lumbreras, Librilla and Águilas.
Celdrán said that "we continue to make progress in the area of waste management and in the development of the Regional Circular Economy Strategy, which will contribute to improving the environment, but also to increase the competitiveness of our entire productive sector, turning what into other raw materials into other Epochs was considered waste and ends up in landfills. "
The improvement actions are mainly focused on installing new machinery to improve the recovery and preparation of recyclable waste and for the recovery of glass, in the process of refining the organic matter and improving the quality of the compost obtained;
improvements in the management of the entrances and exits of products, with the cover of the collection area of recyclable waste recovered, and adaptation of the current installation for the reception and treatment of the organic fraction, collected separately at source.
In addition, it will allow the direct reduction of the emission of greenhouse gases, avoiding the emission of 2,941 equivalent tons of CO2, according to the principle of the Carbon Footprint calculation protocol for the management of municipal waste in Spain.
Fifth phase
The urban solid waste that arrives at the Waste Treatment Center of Lorca is processed in such a way that from some received and processed waste, by-products are obtained with the possibility of being reused or valued by other industries (paper-cardboard, aluminum, iron , plastic, glass) and refined compost for agriculture.
Rejects and non-recoverable waste are deposited in open containers and transferred to the Controlled Waste Reservoir that exists in the facilities.
"This is the fifth phase of the project to improve facilities that in previous phases have involved an investment of more than 12.5 million euros, bringing the total investment to 18.5 million euros" said the counselor of Tourism, Culture and Environment.
The period to execute and complete the works is 12 months.
After this period, these must be operational from the day of receipt to be operated by Municipal Cleaning Lorca SA (Limusa).
