Lorca is reinforced as a national reference in recycling and recovery of materials thanks to a new investment of 6 million euros in the Management Center of Barranco Hondo (05/04/2018)

The modernization of the CGR allows Lorca to save 5.7 million euros each year in the receipt of garbage.

It is a project that is unfolded at 4,748,233 euros for this year and will be completed in 2019 with the remaining 1,190,609 euros.

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, and the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, Javier Celdrán, together with the CEO of the municipal company Limusa, Juan Francisco Martínez, visited this morning the Waste Management Center (CGR) of Barranco Hondo, coinciding with the start of the expansion works of its facilities for the optimization of management processes and classification of urban waste that aims to increase the recovery capacity of organic materials and inorganic

The investment approved by the Governing Council on March 7 for an amount of 5,9038,842 euros is for the improvement of the refining line for composting, the treatment of MSW and, consequently, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. greenhouse effect.

The works will have an execution period of 12 months and are carried out by the Agrarian Transformation Company (Tragsa).

The investment is split into 4,748,233 euros for this year and will be completed in 2019 with the remaining 1,190,609 euros.

In particular, improvements in the refining line are aimed at the automatic recovery of the glass to extract it from the process of production of the compost and the increase of recovery of organic matter.

In the RSU treatment plant, it is intended to increase both the recovery of plastic materials in the automatic reclassification plant and the recovery of two materials, film and paper / cardboard, with certain marketing limitations.

Carbon footprint

Another of the indirect (or direct) benefits of the modernization of the plant with these actions is the direct reduction of the emission of greenhouse gases, which, taken as a whole, is calculated in the non-emission of 2,941 equivalent tons of CO2, according to the principle of the Carbon Footprint calculation protocol for the management of municipal waste in Spain.

The recovery of the glass derived from the performance in the refining plant to automatically select this residue contained in the compost before being refined, could avoid a total of 390.09 tons of CO2e.

The recovery of materials derived from the improvement in the automatic classification system, on the other hand, could avoid a total of 2,551.13 tons of CO2e.

Higher performance

The expected result in the bio-stabilized material after the refining of the organic matter, assuming an estimated efficiency with the new process of automatic glass recovery of 90%, would improve the recovery of the plant by 4.38 percentage points, which would imply a total recoverable of 2,084 tons / year.

On the treated organic matter, thanks to these improvements, starting from an estimated efficiency of 70%, it could improve the recovery by 2.87 percentage points, which would mean a recoverable total of 1,368 tons / year.

For this, new screening equipment and vibrating tables, optical separation equipment for glass, new densimetric table for the additional recovery of organic matter, installation of compressed air, conveyor belts, storage area are incorporated into a new surface annexed to the current one. , in addition to all the additional electrical and control installations.

The wastewater treatment plant has observed the loss of materials at a specific point in the rejection chain, which could be reincorporated into the automatic recovery chain and optimize the triage stations.

The result is estimated between 2 and 3 percentage points of recovery with respect to the entry of materials into the plant.

For this, the incorporation of a second unit of both the recovered materials and the ballistic separator is required;

a new equipment of optical separation and relocation of the existing ones in the chain, a pincha bottle equipment, a pneumatic capitation equipment and increase of the number of points of capture of film, weighing equipment of flows, necessary conveyor belts, automation of the plant through expansion of the SCADA / CMMS, a new aluminum separation equipment and a new metal separation equipment at the end of the line.

This would allow to recover additionally the aluminiums before its incorporation to the zone of maturation and composting, which at the moment is generating the degradation of the materials.

The investment destined by the CARM also faces other operations necessary for the better functioning of the CGR as well as to improve the exploitation of the plant, and which will contribute to the reduction of landfill rejection, or the reduction of problems derived from the temporary exposure of by-products to the weather;

thanks to solutions such as new material walkways, roofing or specification of reception areas.

This initiative has European co-financing through Feder funds and aims to comply with the objectives set by the Directive of the European Parliament and the Council amending Directive 2008/98 / EC, on waste, dated 2 December 2015, which raises the need to carry out various actions to achieve 50% of the volume of preparation of waste for reuse, recycling, composting and recovery in 2020.
