Popular Party representatives of municipalities in the province of Almeria and Murcia Guadalentín Valley this morning we gathered in Lorca we want to record our full support to the food production sector just now being debated in Parliament a modification of the increase of the share of imports from Morocco.
For the meeting today, it's a deal which seriously harms the interests of Spain, and in this case, the farmers' inter-county area between Guadalentín Valley and the west of Almeria.
The rejection from the Summit against the agreement Intercomarcal performed already on the table of the European authorities is based on the terms set out in that document are reflected in real terms, gradually open up the European market for Moroccan producers.
The agreement provides, as anticipated, and officially, an increase of concessions without considering such negative consequences it will have on the Spanish sector, and poor application because he has not respected the preferential entry price, or has taken no action to avoid serious disruptions to markets.
Under these agreements, the coincidence of production schedules with Spain, and the proximity of these Mediterranean countries to the EU market are causing great damage to the Spanish tomato sector, and a 'domino effect' on other strategic crops, both under shelter or outdoors, such as peppers, zucchini, watermelon, stone fruit, table grapes, citrus, melons and strawberries, among others.
Spanish farmers have been actions for the modernization of the productive sector of the tomato that has affected the crop plant improvement, reduction of production costs and improving quality and yields.
However, this effort will not be effective if it is increasing concessions to Morocco at a time in which they are establishing large farms in this country who practice social dumping, and production of fruit and vegetables market-oriented community that will compete Spanish producers directly.
Based on the above and to the development of the Association Agreement negotiations, it is necessary that the EU authorities concerned take into account the demands that are made below to avoid further damage to the Spanish producers of fruits and vegetables and in particular tomato.
Given these facts, we consider pusillanimous attitude that has been keeping to the interests of agri-food sector by the current Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who again used the sector as a bargaining chip to satisfy the interests of Morocco.
The most recent statements carried out by political leaders from the National Government, particularly the current Minister for the Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, Rosa Aguilar, again highlighting the total lack of effort that are performing defend the interests of our agriculture.
These facts seem irresponsible and incomprehensible, since, apart from the damage it inflicts on farmers, Morocco is being delivered to the task of filling our pantry, with the consequent impact on consumers and European Spanish.
For all the foregoing, the representatives here today, together with the expressed rejection of the above agreement, we agreed on the establishment of an observatory that will analyze current developments around this issue, and propose the adoption of actions considered necessary in the political offensive is now open in Lorca.
The aforementioned observatory will consist of a representatives Guadalentín Valley and one from the Almeria area, and its constitution is given by made as a result of the summit today developed.
