The Governing Council has approved the extension until the end of 2012, an agreement for the implementation of a Program for Training and Technology Transfer for the Development of autochthonous pig breed, Chato Murciano.
The program was developed in the Integrated Center for Agricultural Training and Experience, CIFE, Lorca, and involves the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, the Association of Swine Health Protection of Lorca (ADESPA-LORCA) and Breeders Association Conservation and Recovery Chato Murciano (ACHAMUR).
The agreement, signed in 2007 and does not involve additional expenditure of funding for the Department, aims to meet the demands of regional livestock sector to improve swine breed 'flat Murcia', remain competitive and achieve sustainable development .
The program will enhance the selection process of breeding of this native race, which will study its characteristics, improved productivity and conservation.
The pigs 'flat' is a gene pool that enriches the biodiversity of livestock species within Spain.
The Murcia Region currently has a census of 250 breeding females spread over the 16 farms located in the municipalities of Murcia, Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras and Bullas.
The 'Chato Murciano' is listed by the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine, as a Special Protection breed in danger of extinction.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Water is conducting a 'Conservation and Recovery Program of the Chato Murciano' with optimum results with various lines of research and collaboration between different public and private agencies in the Region of Murcia and beyond it.
Of these actions have been developed farms in the race 'Chato Murciano', with an incipient production of quality meat products and competitive.
