Councillors on the Environment and Sustainable Development of the City of Lorca, Melchor Morales and Francisco García, announced that the Local Government Board has approved the Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar firm's commitments under the Covenant of Mayors European Union Sustainable Energy, which commits us to produce in a year an Action Plan for Sustainable Energy.
"The goal is to go beyond the targets set by the European Union by 2020 reducing emissions of CO2 in our geographical areas in at least 20% through the implementation of this plan," Garcia said.
The mayor added that "as a basis for the drafting of this plan will develop a baseline emissions inventory, after which they will mobilize civil society in our municipalities to participate in developing the Action Plan, outlining the policies and measures necessary for the implementation and achievement of the objectives of the Plan. Following this agreement the City will submit a progress report at least every two years from the adoption of the Plan of Action for evaluation, monitoring and control.
For its part, Melchor Morales explained that the result of this pact will also organize a "Day of Energy" or "Day of the Covenant of Mayors" in collaboration with the European Commission and other stakeholders, in order that citizens directly benefit from the opportunities and advantages that smarter use of energy and to inform the local media on the development of action plan.
The Covenant of Mayors is an initiative of the European Commission, aimed at local authorities, to combat climate change.
To promote and encourage adherence to the Covenant, the Agency for Energy Management in the Region of Murcia, is working with the intention of making the Region of Murcia is the first European region where all municipalities are part of the Covenant of Mayors.
