Schneider and Sun Power Andaltia cooperating in the development of photovoltaic solar power plant in Europe's largest Lorca (17/05/2011)

The Minister of Universities and Research Company, Salvador Marín, accompanied by the mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, chaired today the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between multinational Andaltia and Schneider Electric and Sun Power to cooperate in the development of photovoltaic solar power plant 400 megawatts (MW) and the possibility of launching production centers to provide technology and equipment supply.

The inclusion of these two leading companies is a milestone in the construction of the largest installation of photovoltaic solar energy production is currently planned in Europe and help to make a pole Lorca national and international renewable energy.

Likewise, companies and Yingli Solar Sun Tech also signed similar agreements and from the Autonomous Community and the city of Lorca is undertaking a major project management and streamline administrative procedures to make this project generates employment and wealth a reality.

The signing of this agreement is to strengthen the collaboration agreement signed with Andaltia Community, reflecting the commitment to source technology and collaborate with business and technology research centers and settled in the region for the construction of solar photovoltaic Central Lorca and other company projects.

This business initiative is the result of the Industrial Plan for Attracting Investment Plan launched by the regional government, whose main objective to promote the development, diversification and strengthening of the productive fabric of the region.

The project

Andaltia The project will involve the construction of the largest production plant of solar power in Europe.

The facility will be capable of generating electricity to power 200,000 homes, with the added thanks to R & D and economies of scale achieved energy production under normal, ie at a price that competes with the coal-fired, combined cycle and nuclear.

With the commissioning of this plant, Lorca host a project with an estimated investment of over one billion euros and will generate 590 direct jobs.

The plant will be developed in four phases.

The first will have an investment of 114 million euros and will need a thousand workers for the launch of the first phase of 40 MW of power, the second will be 50 MW at a cost of 142 million and employ 1,300 people.

The last two are most important, 150 and 160 MW respectively, investments of more than 425 million euros and 3,000 workers need for their development and implementation.

Andaltia plans to start work in 2013, after completion of the conceptual development of central and has the administrative authorizations for which direct collaboration with the Community and the City.

In fact, the Ministry has already held meetings with the Ministry of Industry and Spanish Red Electrica, who have shown interest in the degree of innovation involved, as well as its social and economic benefits.

Companies involved in the project

Firms are collaborating with Andaltia in the development and subsequent construction of the plant are leading multinational electrical-energy sector.

For example, Schneider Electric has more than 110,000 employees spread worldwide and recorded sales last year close to 20,000 million euros.

SunPower makes the solar panels more efficient on the market today, while SunTech are manufacturers with higher global production of plates in 2010.

Finally, Yingli Solar, headquartered in China, is engaged in the manufacture of solar panels from silicon purification, production of solar cells and solar module assembly.
