The forensic team of the Institute of Legal Medicine of Murcia, comprising forensic experts, technical support staff and laboratory assistants, led by the institute's director, Rafael Banon, completed in record time work on the identification and autopsy of victims deadly earthquake in Lorca on 11 May.
In order to facilitate the return of the bodies to relatives as soon as possible, autopsies and identification of fatalities began at 8:00 am on 12th May and ended before 13:00 pm that same day.
At that time was reported to the Court of Lorca complete identification of the bodies and progress of the autopsy results for the judicial authority may authorize the removal and burial.
After the two earthquakes occur, two teams of the Institute of Legal Medicine of Murcia Lorca moved to where they worked until 2:00 am on 12th May that estimated the low probability that more bodies were located.
In parallel, a coroner entered the Advance Command Post, while in the Institute's headquarters, personnel coordinated the entry and registration of deaths and autopsies planning.
The director of the Institute kept informed at all times, the Ministry of Justice, which oversees the National Technical Commission for events with multiple victims, if the size and complexity of the disaster would have required extraordinary measures to articulate beyond the scope of the Autonomous Community .
