Ecologists in Action calls to recycle the rubble of Lorca (30/05/2011)

The environmental organization said the consistory lorquino solidarity with those affected, while demand proper waste management to avoid environmental problems in the short term.

The earthquake that struck the city of Lorca last on May 11 seriously affected the structure of many buildings and forcing authorities to order its demolition.

Ecologists in Action has sent a letter to the City of Lorca to remember that the Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) may be an important resource, provided it is managed properly.

The management of the RCD is regulated by Royal Decree 105/2008, a law that aims to discourage the landfilling of recoverable waste and prohibits the discharge of debris without treatment.

But this time not from the rubble of a planned demolition and mixed with the entire contents of the buildings affected in the demolition of Lorca is possible - and advisable - to collect the majority of materials and value them separately.

Examples include the high price of copper and other metals.

That is, if properly managed, waste in general and the RCD in particular can be an important source of resources [1].

By contrast, mixed burial is also illegal, a source of negative environmental impacts in the short term.

In this regard it is interesting to observe what is happening in Fukushima, which is spreading and making the waste generated in the wake of the recent earthquake and tsunami.

Lorca's case is much smaller, so it should be easier than in Japan and manage separate materials properly.

Ecologists in Action appeals to common sense and environmental awareness of the consistory Lorca.

[1] In the Netherlands has long been recycled an average of 82% of the RCD, of which are obtained from high quality materials, used in construction and public works and commercial value.
