After the earthquakes that struck the city of Lorca on 11 May, whose citizens left desolate, on the afternoon of yesterday, January 11, opened a door to hope, expression of the generosity of many for this population.
From the first time after those events, the Church Diocese of Cartagena, in the person of their bishop, Monsignor Jose Manuel Lorca, expressed his concern for the needs of people who had suffered the consequences of earthquakes.
Its proximity and prayer for the victims who lost their lives, the pain to those who lost their homes, and to those who, for lack of work, are in a precarious situation.
Given this reality, the Bishop set up a committee to work towards an equitable distribution of solidarity aid, known as DEAS, and within which arises the Social Treasurer, who yesterday was blessed and inaugurated, and whose management Caritas has been entrusted to Interparroquial of Lorca, which aims to extend in time that helps people to this institution of the Diocesan Church has been doing since May 11 intensely.
The act of blessing, which was chaired by the pastor of the diocese, was also attended by the Mayor of Lorca with some representatives of the Municipal Corporation, and several members of the Episcopal Council, Diocesan Director of Caritas and Caritas of Lorca, the priests of the city and many faithful volunteers who wanted to be present at this time.
Mr. Bishop explained that the Social Treasurer, which is called Mamre, referring to the place where Abraham took in those three pilgrims, is aimed at helping families affected by earthquake and who are in financial difficulties serious, so they can buy staples for food and hygiene at a cost of 30% of its market value, assuming the Diocese the remaining 70%, from the aid received.
In his speech also took the opportunity to thank the generosity of all those who have made this project possible, financial assistance to its implementation, as well as others that are already underway or will soon see the light.
Among these benefactors should be noted solidarity aid received from the Spanish Episcopal Conference, the various dioceses of Spain, every parish in the diocese, religious institutions, as well as plenty of people who have contributed generously, with the sole purpose of helping Lorca and its people.
