The City of Lorca commitment to maintaining the slurry treatment plants and electric cogeneration Shire (31/03/2014)

The Full Municipal Consistory today approved unanimously by the three groups represented municipal text of a joint motion of support for this sector.

The Full Council of Lorca has unanimously approved this morning a joint motion of the three political groups which arise intervention actions to address the treatment of slurry to the possible closure of the cogeneration plants serving in the region.

The text incorporates is negotiated with representatives of the pig sector organizations, as well as the Association for Environmental Desimpacto of Purines, a solution that allows the feasibility of slurry treatment plants, given that regulatory reform has caused this situation is not approved, and may go back and find common ground to reach a stage that allows the continuation of the same.

The motion includes that while a search for negotiated solutions the system of remuneration that was being applied, before the proposal is known, so that this measure allows the implementation immediately, all the plants keeps manure treatment, which currently have paralyzed its activity, prevent the loss of jobs, and at the same time can be given out to the manure pile already on livestock farms, generated in recent weeks.

The agreement provides that transfer of this proposal to the Ministries of Agriculture and Water, and Industry, Enterprise and Innovation in the Region of Murcia, and all political parties represented in the Regional Assembly is given and the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.

It has also been agreed that knowledge is given to all representative organizations of the pig sector in the region, the Association for Environmental Desimpacto of Purines and labor unions.

The motion also states that there are important reasons to continue investing in the continuity of these cogeneration plants slurry treatment, such as:

- After more than 10 years of operation, they have proven to be very useful to ensure proper management of surplus manure in areas of more livestock density instrument.

-The slurry treatment system, with the elimination of water and getting a solid product, easy to store and manage the outcome as fertilizers agrícolas.-These plants are the best tool to help the collective management of manure in the territory.

'They have made significant investments in new technologies, such as biogas production, which means significant reductions in CO2 emissions and nitrógeno.-In rural areas, this investment has generated economic activity and creation of work in both cogeneration plants and livestock farms, and their disappearance will cause significant losses in the sector, to make it less competitive.

3 levels in the region, including 2 in Lorca

In the case of the Region of Murcia have 3 cogeneration plants slurry treatment, all located in the Shire Guadalentin, two in Lorca, particularly in the County of fennel and the other in the Sierra de Tertia, and third in the town of Alhama de Murcia, location is no accident, given that we talk about areas with deep roots in the pig sector.

Also we can say that events have already been precipitated, and on Thursday 20 February, in one of the plants Lorca, given the uncertainty and insecurity generated on the future of cogeneration activity and viability, the company that bears out its operation, opted for the dismissal of 8 workers, not forgetting that in all cases, as announced at the beginning of this proposal, plants have paralyzed its activity.

This uncertainty has been transferred to farmers who have their own rafts slurry packed and do not know what to do with them, given that this situation drags stop since the beginning of this month of February.

Moreover, the closure of these facilities would cause a critical situation for the farms and in the affected areas, as these plants can ensure that proper management of manure, and continuity of operations, and otherwise would render Spanish pig production alternatives, directly affecting their competitiveness, while also cease to treat 2.5 million tonnes of slurry.
