The Directorate General for Environment, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, has yielded six hectares of public forest of Los Madroños and Alagüeces, in the municipality of Lorca, for the planting of 3,000 seedlings of native species such as oaks, Kermes oak, pine and olive trees, with the aim of halting desertification and enhance biodiversity.
The results of this project have been collected on video and shown at a press conference today in Lorca by its promoters, the WWF and Postal association.
The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the City of Lorca and the Directorate General for Environment.
The semiarid forest of Lorca, whose restocking postal workers participated in this location in December 2012, joins the WWF and Postal ecosystems recovered in the peninsula and has already reached an area of 70 hectares, with more than 25,000 seedlings distributed between the provinces of Lugo, Pontevedra, Toledo, Cáceres and Madrid, among others.
Post collaborates with WWF since 2010 in the recovery of forests through its 'Green Line' ecological packaging, the sale of which the postal company allocates a portion to finance environmental initiatives.
At each location degraded areas in need of restoration, like Mount The Arbutus and Los Alhagüeces in Lorca, a priority habitat whose recovery is essential to stop erosion and make the forest more resistant against the consequences of climate change are identified.
