The campaign, to be conducted jointly with the AECC, aims to raise public awareness about the importance of sun protection to prevent skin cancer, as well as guidelines to follow to prevent heat stroke
The Councillor for Health of the City of Lorca, Antonia Lopez, and the president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), Magdalena Lopez, presented this morning the awareness campaign both entities, together with the Department of the Mayor, will perform together for the prevention of skin diseases generated by direct sunlight and recommendations to follow to avoid heat stroke, due to the high temperatures expected this summer.
Antonia Lopez explained that, specifically, is to install an information table in the Alameda of the Constitution and another at the entrance to the weekly market on Thursday, June 18 from 9:30 to 13:30, in order to inform the public about the recommendations to follow to avoid heat stroke and sunburn.
These tables are intended to spread the importance of using sunscreen especially when going to the beach as well as when working or being on the street at peak radiation.
In addition, we also aim to raise public awareness about the advice they should follow to avoid heat stroke due to high temperatures.
The mayor of Health has reported that for this purpose will be shared 200 samples of sunscreen Interapothex donated by the company and 300 bottles of water as well as brochures on preventing skin cancer and recommendations to be followed by citizens from heat stroke.
Lopez pointed out that in the region of Murcia, according to the latest data available from the Murcia Health Service, are diagnosed each year between 140 and 180 new cases of melanoma skin cancer type and almost 80 percent of them are due to the exposure to solar ultraviolet light source.
Cases of melanoma are usually diagnosed in patients who burn easily without tanning, which have hair and eyes and with many moles as well as those with a history-rich sunburn during childhood.
In this sense, only ten percent of cases have a family history.
Overall, melanoma cancer type, gender, is the ninth most commonly occurs in women and eleven men, but its incidence is experiencing an upward trend year by año.Por this reason, in our city, we must always adopt preventive measures and frequency of these tumors is increasing and we are geographically more vulnerable by the number of hours of sunlight region.
Antonia Lopez, on the other hand, recalled that human exposure to high ambient temperatures can cause an alteration of our vital functions in the event that our body is unable to compensate for variations in temperature.
In fact, a very high temperature causes loss of water and electrolytes that are necessary for normal functioning of the various organs.
The heat does not affect all people equally, as there are more sensitive to the effects of high temperatures groups.
In this context we find people over 65 and children under 4 years, to which must be added for people suffering from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer's, respiratory or mental illness, workers and people exposed to the sun, as well as people being treated with drugs such as diuretics, beta blockers, antidepressants, or people suffering from obesity.
Exposure to excessive temperatures can cause health problems such as cramps, dehydration, sunstroke, heat stroke and sunburn.
This year, as in previous occasions, a few weeks ago, the Department of Health is using the traffic light panels that exist in our town to send advice to the public about how to avoid heat stroke.
From City of Lorca, as measures to prevent heat stroke, especially in the elderly and children, it indicated avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, to help our seniors living alone;
avoid sunburn by applying sunscreen;
avoid physical activity in the middle of the day, drink water frequently, cover their heads with hats or caps;
avoid hot foods and slow digestion;
wear sunglasses, do not consume alcohol, increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables, as well as using lightweight clothing and footwear.
