Some 50 specialists in History participate in the "Second International Course of Medieval Archaeology of Sefarad" organized by the Universidad del Mar in Lorca (20/07/2015)

The period of training, which aims to provide students with tools allowing him to identify and analyze aspects of medieval Jewish material culture combine a series of workshops and conferences.

It will last 25 hours and the university may redeem for 2.5 elective credits or 1 credit ECTS CRAU

The Councillor for Culture of the City of Lorca, Augustine Llamas, reported this morning inaugurated the "II International Course of Medieval Archaeology of Sefarad" organized by the Universidad del Mar and will develop at different locations in the city as Castle or the Archaeological Museum.

The aim of the course is to provide students with tools allowing him to identify and analyze those aspects of medieval material culture that may be considered distinguishing features of Jewish communities in the Islamic and Christian contexts of the Iberian peninsula during the medieval period.

Accordingly, during the course a series of lectures given by some of the best specialists in Archaeology of the Jewish minority in the Middle Ages with several workshops will be combined.

The sessions will focus on the characterization of religious spaces, identifying indicators and archaeozoological classification and interpretation of liturgical and domestic furniture.

The exceptional archaeological find of late medieval Castle Lorca Jewry and the fifteenth century synagogue will be the ideal place for the development of practical contents, which include working with original archaeological materials (ceramics, metals, glass) and scenario analysis buildings and in situ archaeological contexts.

The course is not only conceived as a field of theoretical and practical training in archeology, but also aspires to become a space for cultural dialogue on common problems of the identification and interpretation of archaeological contexts Jews in predominantly Christian historical societies or Islamic.

On the other hand, it aims to reach a stage set detail on the problems arising from the revaluation of the medieval heritage of Jewish minorities.

During the course there will be five hours of activities, such as visits to the historic center, the medieval walls and the Castle of Lorca, led by Andres Martinez Rodriguez, Director of the Archaeological Museum of Lorca that will enable participants to know the archaeological heritage and tourism.

The training period in which they will participate about 50 people will run for 25 hours and college students can redeem for 2.5 elective credits or 1 credit ECTS CRAU.

The course focuses on practical workshops taught by professors from the University of Murcia and the Institute of History (CSIC), and conferences, some taught by professionals in the field such as Paul Salmone the Museum of Art and History of Judaism Paris, CNRS Jean Passini or Anna Colet of Regional Museum of L'Urgell-Tarrega, among others.

Note that this initiative is the only specialized course offers a complete theoretical and, most particularly, practice on medieval archeology of the Jewish minority in the Iberian Peninsula to students and specialists trained in archeology and other historical contexts from countries familiar with the material culture of the Jews in other settings.
