Once the work put into the tunnels of Lorca at the forefront of these works in Europe at the level of equipment and safety requirements.
These requirements demanded by the State Highway Network in Royal Decree 635/2006, have their antecedents in the European Directive 2004/54 on the safety of tunnels in the trans-European road network and aims to ensure adequate security for prevent critical situations that may put at risk human life, the environment and the infrastructures.
Description of works
Work began in 2007 and have involved the construction of two galleries of communication between the tunnels, semicircular dome-shaped 2.5-m radius on a gable of a height of 2 m and a length of 193 m and 140 m to the north and south galleries, respectively.
These galleries have been designed for quick and safe evacuation of people in case of accident, and are equipped with seals and ventilation systems and public address systems to ensure the safety of users eventually use
We have also carried out the expansion of the facilities and control center Lorca tunnels, located in the N-340.
During the execution of these works have been carried out with normal routine maintenance work such as renewal of the pavement surface course, the improvement of drainage and waterproofing against leaks in walls, improved circuit lighting, waterproofing houses of generators, replacement of cameras, marking of road, etc.
It was considered useful complement all equipment and facilities above the adjustment of the courts of the mouths of the tunnels, through the construction of two helipads, one in each mouth.
These were tested successfully landing are facilities that would be very useful in an emergency.
Two new galleries have been equipped with fire protection measures, electrical installation by normal fluorescent lighting and emergency signaling devices and access control, CCTV video cameras and transmitters fixed video, PA system consisting of sound projectors and amplifiers and post placement support SOS incidents.
They also have radio messaging users to emergencies, drainage of toxic and flammable liquids.
It has also been renewed the paving with a special rolling friction increases the vehicle and allows better grip and used a reflective coating.
Moreover, we have modified the control system, making it an open system to facilitate future extensions and repairs to improve ventilation and are mounted four new fans in the tunnel II.
Development works
In order not to affect users of the highway, from its inception, these works were slowed down in the summer and during Christmas week, busiest times.
In addition, when work required total cut of one of the tunnels, these were made during the night or in the peak hours of traffic intensity.
During the day only rarely remained one of the rails cut to the implementation requirements of the work under the strictest security measures and following established protocols for routine maintenance work on the tunnels.
Finally, we must remember that these tunnels are part of the Trans-European Road Network (TERN) and support an average daily traffic (ADT) of more than 32,000 vehicles per day.
