Public Works funded the refurbishment of the Plaza of Spain in Lorca (07/06/2009)

The full scope to the plazas are Caño Belluga and sections of streets Santiago, Villaescusa, Juan de Toledo and Alamo

The Ministry of Public Works and Planning, through the Directorate General of Housing and Architecture, will finance the refurbishment of the squares of Spain, and Belluga Cano, urban spaces indexed by the Special Protection Plan and Comprehensive Rehabilitation of the Historic Lorca's artistic.

It is a type of subsidy that is aimed at recovery of regional heritage, "to be the policy of conservation and adaptation of public space a key priority for the regional government," said the general director of Housing and Architecture, Mark Nogueroles .

Today, the Plaza of Spain dedicated a significant portion of its space to the parking of vehicles, which are organized around a central pedestrian area with a double alignment of trees, as happens in the square of the Pipe, so that both spaces are unrelated to each other and their environment monumental, "something that will be resolved with the implementation of the refurbishment, which will considerably improve the distribution of these spaces and the relationship with its immediate architectural environment" said Mark Nogueroles.

Therefore, the Department has awarded a grant to the city of Lorca with the aim of providing a unified character to the spaces, "supported by the consistency of the design of pavements and the use of a new street furniture", as noted Nogueroles, who recalled that future natural stone benches serve as a basis to streetlights and new trees will be planted in both spaces.

In this way, all the seats will be resolved with granite flooring in a grid and abolished traffic areas along the San Patricio and carrerón Chapterhouses, while public parking will be eliminated.

On the other hand, will restore the old entrance from the Plaza del Cardenal Belluga, which will replace the existing stairs that provide access to the main facade of the Collegiate, which will allow the recovery of its original distribution.

The director of Housing and Architecture recalled the interest and awareness that the city of Lorca shows, "concerned to maintain and preserve these places as part of the history of his people" Noguez said.

Historic surroundings

The Plaza of Spain was begun in the sixteenth century, when the city began to extend beyond the perimeter walls.

In the eighteenth century reached its peak when it concluded the steps of the Collegiate and added a second body to the old jail (now Town Hall), against which are the Chapter Houses.

Was thus set the square, with the shorter sides occupied by the City Council and Chapter Houses, while the Collegiate Church and a number of outstanding family homes completed the rectangle.

Articulated with the above, the Plaza del Caño also originated in the sixteenth century.

It housed the Granary (today the Municipal Archives), the former Casa del Corregidor (now Courts) and side facade of City Hall.

The square takes its name from the source that supplied water to the population.

The scope is complemented by the square brackets Belluga and Santiago streets, Villaescusa, Juan de Toledo and Alamo.
