The Mayor noted that archaeological excavations in the castle as a reference to Lorca confirm European Jewish culture (08/03/2010)

The works are performed by a multidisciplinary team from the University of Murcia |

Lorca's mayor, Francisco Jodar, together with the Secretary General of the Network of Jewish Quarters in Spain, Assumpció Hosta, the Secretary General of Casa Sefarad-Israel, Miguel de Lucas, and Manager of "Lorca Taller del Tiempo" M ª Angeles Dormouse, have visited this morning the excavations being carried to term in the surroundings of the castle of Lorca.

This visit has been informed of the progress of the second phase of archaeological excavations in the eastern area of the castle of Lorca.

Municipal sources have indicated that this second phase of the excavations is a major breakthrough in the process of historical and archaeological study, consolidation and enhancement of the fortified which began in June last year.

The archaeological work has allowed to bring to light what appears to be a craft area in the late medieval Jewry Lorca.

The three phases included in the project have a total investment of 120,000 euros, of which the first phase was spent 30,000, 60,000 the second and the third € 30,000 more.

If the first phase of excavations documented several domestic structures of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries belonging to the northern edge of the urban fabric of the medieval Jewish quarter of Lorca, in this second phase, different agencies are discovering that seem to set up a work space craft.

Although the archaeological works have not been finalized yet, it seems that we are facing a sector crucial to understand the socio-economic organization of the Jewish Lorca, where are the remains of what could be a workshop production of glass.

In addition, new structures have been found that will require the formation of late medieval neighborhood of Alcala, in the years immediately after the Spanish conquest of the thirteenth century, and the characteristics of the fortress of Lorca in the Islamic period.

These actions, which are accompanied by a series of archaeological laboratory and a side project of consolidation and adaptation to tourist use of the exhumed remains are a step in the creation of the archaeological park space Lorca Castle East will serve as a connecting link between the musealized sector Fortaleza del Sol and the remains preserved in other sectors of the fortified, as the synagogue or the church of San Clemente.

This phase of excavations have been conducted with the cooperation of the three administrations (local, regional and state) through the Product Plan to Promote Tourism Lorca, embodied in the Master Plan-Fort Parador del Sol The intervention has been developed again by an interdisciplinary team led by Dr. Jorge A.

Eiroa Rodríguez of the Universidad de Murcia, and archaeologists Juan Gallardo Carrillo and José Ángel González Ballesteros.

This visit has served as the grand finale of the series of lectures on "Jewish Culture in Lorca, Lorca organized by Time Workshop and funded by the Revitalization Plan, which has been developed at the headquarters of Ceclor.
